MURAL
THE ROYAL BUG LOVER SOCIETY
Throughout my life, I have always been one to flip over a rock to see what lives underneath it. Bugs and other creatures have always filled me with wonder and amazement. The meeting takes place in a dark, dimly lit room with an old leather chair, a bookshelf full of strange items, and a table. On the wall hangs a butterfly display case and a poster of a beetle. The club is made up of five members: two frogs, one bat, a housefly, and me. There will be a wooden carved plaque underneath it that reads “The Royal Bug Lover Society”.
This acrylic on Masonite painting depicts a scene from a meeting of The Royal Bug Lovers Society. This is a secret society I have made up to represent some of the themes and subject matter I love the most. Over the past few years I have struggled with my identity as an artist, feeling like because most of the art I was creating lacked a deeper meaning, it wasn't real art. I have finally realized that my style as an artist is to draw and paint things that I love in a way that brings me joy. That is why I decided to paint this mural of funny little things that I like in a illustrative style.
My colour palette is full of browns and deep reds, but also plenty of vibrant colours in small sections of the piece. I think that both the subject matter, and its lightheartedness represent my style and my attitude towards my own art.
